Boxley Warren

This area of downland is both very precious and also pressured. It lies between Maidstone and Chatham, nearby to Bredhurst Woods, and is designated both as a Site of Special Scientific Interest for the chalk downland wildlife that it supports, and as a Special Area of Conservation for internationally rare yew woodland. Scrub clearance and protection work carried out by Natural England, The Mid Kent Downs Countryside Partnership and the landowner have meant that the site is much improved for wildlife and the future looks hopeful. With healthy populations of orchids, adders and newly planted native box trees, there is much to celebrate and conserve. There is now a new Friends of Boxley Warren volunteer group who have tasks on every second Sunday of the month. To get involved please contact midkentdowns@midkentdowns.org.uk or look for Friends of Boxley Warren on facebook.
